Welcome to my blog!
I’m Mulan, the Golden Retriever. I was born on 11th January 2014 and, together with my brother Melvin, have been especially chosen by Hachiko’s experts to become a service dog when I’m all grown up. As you probably know it is quite an honour to be chosen. Not every dog can become a service dog. You have to be made of the right stuff. And to seperate the gold from the grub that is a job for very special specialists. They come to our nest and have us do all sorts of weird stuff and when it’s all done they know who is or isn’t qualified. That whole thingamajig is rather complicated, I just had a great time doing it. But let’s make a deal, you and me. Let us pretend towards Hachiko that I knew exactly what I was doing, alright?
Obviously you don’t become a service dog overnight. That takes a very long time. Two years to be precise. During those two years I will need to learn everything in order to adequately perform my duties as a service dog. By that time I will also get my permanent owner. It’s all very exciting! But first I have to learn a lot. To help me in this task, Hachiko has come up with an ingenious and devious plan. She regularly collects a pack of humans and proclaims them to be guest families. They then take one future champion home with them for one and a half year and have the honour and privelege to teach us about 80% of the total amount of things we need to learn. After those eighteen months we return to the Hachiko center where we will spend another six months focussing on specialised tasks, such as getting familiar and proficient around wheelchairs. And then we finally get our real home. Meh, as service dog you have to prove your worth and that’s a good thing too. We’re not ‘The Best of the Best’ for our puppy eyes.
Thursday 13 March 2014 is when it all started for real for me. That’s the day when I got to go home with Mystica, my guest family owner. She will be maintaining this blog for me and also update everyone on my progress. She’s proven to be ok so far but it remains to be seen how she’s going to perform as my secretary. As future champion I do have a certain reputation to uphold, after all. My fans expect no less. So I will be keeping a close eye on her. From time to time it may be that I will post an update myself but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. An Executive Champ does have a very busy life.
I do hope that you’ll enjoy this blog and please feel free to comment where you feel like it.
That will be very useful in the evaluation of my secretary’s work.
A lick and a cuddle,
